The workers used family-made handcrafted garlands to adorn the 20-foot-tall balsam fir.

Since 1951, NBC has broadcast the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center on a national scale. The workers started a new tradition. Now, millions of people visit the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree every year.

The tree this year is a Norway Spruce from Queensbury, New York. It's adorned with 50,000 multi-colored LED lights and topped with a star made of Swarovski. The iconic tree is chosen every year by the Rockefeller Center's head gardener Erik Pauze. He looks out for potential candidates the whole year and decides on the winning tree by September. By September, the tree is transported to New York City.
